Our Tamil Language Approach

At Qihua Primary School, we nurture pupils to become confident users of Tamil who appreciate the richness of the language and its cultural heritage. Through engaging lessons, meaningful experiences and differentiated support, pupils are encouraged to communicate, create and connect with the language in authentic contexts.

Key Programmes

Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Fornight

Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Fortnight aims to create an immersive environment for learning and appreciating Mother Tongue Languages and Cultures. In Qihua, we provide students with authentic opportunities for them to use MTL and learn about their traditions and culture.

Deepavali Celebration

Pupils celebrate Deepavali through a variety of cultural activities, learning about the significance and traditions of the Festival of Lights. The celebration provides opportunities for pupils to experience and appreciate Tamil culture in a joyful and meaningful way.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Our pupils extend their Tamil learning beyond the classroom through meaningful experiences. P1 and P2 pupils visit Woodlands Regional Library to explore the joy of reading, while P5 pupils participate in the Tamil Language Festival at UPTLC, where they engage in activities that deepen their appreciation of the Tamil language and culture.

National Tamil Debate Competition (Primary)

National Tamil Debate (Primary) Qihua Primary’s Tamil Department participated in the National Tamil Debate (Primary School Series) 2021, where our pupils demonstrated strong Tamil language proficiency, confidence and critical thinking through prepared and impromptu debates. Four Qihuaians advanced to the semi-finals, with Shuruthy Ramkumar receiving the Best Speaker Award for both the Qualifying and Semi-Final rounds. Although the team did not progress to the finals, their resilience, perseverance and commitment were commendable.
